Case Timeline: Prop. 8 Ruled Unconstitutional Again

A Violation of the Constitution

In a landmark decision, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed the historic August 2010 ruling of the Federal District Court that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional.

With its ruling, the Ninth Circuit affirmed a simple, fundamental American truth: Every American, regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, deserves the same dignity and respect, the same freedom to love, to marry and to build a family.

“Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.  The Constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort.”
