SF Chronicle: Prop. 8 foes seek sweeping high-court ruling

“Same-sex couples challenging a 2008 California ballot measure that barred them from marrying asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday to remove the “badge of inferiority, separateness and inequality” from gays and lesbians by granting them equal marriage rights across the nation.

The initiative, Proposition 8, is “an arbitrary, irrational and discriminatory measure that denies gay men and lesbians their fundamental right to marry,” lawyers for the plaintiffs – two same-sex couples from Berkeley and Burbank – said in written arguments to the court.”
