Once the strobe lights were switched off, the camera crews had loaded their gear and the last reporter had asked a final question, Carol Schall and Mary Townley left what they call their “bubble” in the national media spotlight, heading home to Chesterfield County to be normal parents to their 16-year-old daughter, Emily, who couldn’t wait to tell them about her basketball game.
Earlier on a cold day in early February, the couple had attended the hearing in Bostic v. Rainey, the federal court case aimed at overturning Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban, followed by a news conference at a Norfolk hotel.
