Though the Prop. 8 case is California-specific, same-sex couples from around the nation are thrilled with the decision and hope that this is the gateway for gay marriage to favorably enter into the national spotlight. The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court’s ruling is echoing around the country: marriage is a basic civil right that cannot be denied.
“Still, the decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, coming at a time when Washington State seems poised to become the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriages, seems likely to add to what members of both parties said was a sense of momentum. Chad Griffin, the president of theĀ American Foundation for Equal Rights, which challenged Proposition 8, noted that polls in the past year had shown public support for same-sex marriage steadily increasing, a significant change from just a decade ago.”
