The Recorder: Lawyers for Prop 8 Point to President Obama’s Opposition to Same-Sex Marriage

A U.S. Supreme Court debate over cameras loomed large, but trial continued Wednesday in San Francisco over California’s same-sex marriage ban. And in a few key exchanges, lawyers defending Proposition 8 revealed how they will counteract accusations that the “yes” campaign was motivated by bias against gays.

On cross-examination, Cooper & Kirk partner David Thompson asked Yale University professor George Chauncey about President Barack Obama’s opposition to same-sex marriage.

“Do President Obama’s views of same-sex marriage reflect a moral disapproval of gays and lesbians?” Thompson asked.

“I believe they reflect a sense that gay relationships are not equal to heterosexual relationships,” Chauncey said.
