The proponents of Proposition 8 recently sent out an emergency $700,000 appeal for donations. They are rallying their extensive network to aid their defense of Prop. 8 at the U.S. Supreme Court and building a legal defense fund in hopes that the Supreme Court ignores the nationwide momentum in support of marriage equality and upholds Prop. 8 and laws like it.
They lost in 2010 when the Federal District Court ruled Prop. 8 unconstitutional.
They lost again one year ago when the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that ruling in landmark decision that held:
“Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California … The Constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort.”
And they will lose again at the Supreme Court.
The other day, we announced our online fundraising goal—$200,000 before March 26, the date the Supreme Court hears oral argument in our case. We still have a long way to go. Won’t you help us get there?
Loving couples like our plaintiffs, Kris & Sandy and Jeff & Paul, want nothing more than to spend the rest of their lives together, to share their joys with each other, and protect one another and their children in times of need.
It’s time we realize the hopes and dreams of couples like Kris & Sandy and Jeff & Paul by making marriage equality a reality in this great country.
