New Video Features Icons of Bipartisan Support for Marriage Equality

A new video compilation shows that there’s at least one point on which icons of conservative and liberal leadership agree: the freedom to marry is a fundamental American right.

At the American Foundation for Equal Rights, I’m Matt Baume, and welcome to a special episode of Marriage News Watch.

This week the Respect for Marriage Coalition launched a national ad campaign featuring bipartisan leaders speaking out in support of marriage. The hashtag, because of course there’s a hashtag, is #time4marriage. Expect to see TV, print, and online ads for the campaign over the next few weeks.

So what’s the Respect for Marriage Coalition? It’s a group of over 80 organizations supporting the freedom to marry. From AFER to HRC to the Log Cabin Republicans, it’s the first time in history that so many organizations have come together to fund a national ad buy about marriage. The coalition will chip in more than one million dollars to keep the message prominent over the coming weeks.

This comes at the same time that a  new national poll shows three-quarters of all voters believe that marrying the person you love is a fundamental freedom and Constitutional right for every American. A majority of Americans also believes that to continue denying gays and lesbians the freedom to marry constitutes discrimination.
